Canine Rabies Symptoms

  • Rabies is one of the best-known viruses that can strike mammals. According to the website Pet Education there were only three reported human cases of rabies in the U.S. in 2006. This is largely because of extensive rabies vaccinations for dogs. Dogs that are not vaccinated against this virus can become infected and will exhibit symptoms in three stages.

Prodromal Phase

  • This is the first stage of canine rabies and will generally last two to three days, according to Pet Education. During this stage a normally congenial dog will begin to become irritable and may begin to snap at its owners, while a normally aggressive dog may become gentle and affectionate. The dog may also begin to exhibit a loss of appetite, and may run a fever and wish to be left alone. The dog may also bite incessantly lick or bite at the point of infection.

Furious Stage

  • According to website Health Communities the furious stage will last approximately two to four days in dogs. During this stage the dog may begin to act "mad" and will bite and scratch at almost any object, whether inanimate or animate. If confined to a cage, the dog may bite incessantly at the bars until it begins to break its teeth. Canines may also bark, roam and show no signs of fear of other animals or humans. Other symptoms of the furious stage include restlessness, seizures and lack of muscle coordination.

Paralytic Phase

  • This final stage of canine rabies generally lasts anywhere from two to four days, according to Health Communities. The nerves of the dog's head and throat are compromised, which can lead to excessive drooling, or foaming at the mouth, and an inability to swallow. As the disease progresses, the dog will begin to have problems breathing and may begin to make a sound that many owners mistake for choking. Paralysis will then spread throughout the rest of the dog's body until it eventually lapses into a coma and dies
